Tour Guide Simulation in East China

To Understand the New Development of Culture and Tourism on a Learning Tour

As a wealth of talent is vital to the success of a great cause, professionals of culture and tourism are essential in our efforts to turn China into a country with a strong socialist culture, and foster the high-quality development of tourism industry in a new era. In response to the integration of culture and tourism in the Yangtze River Delta, we are cultivating more composite professionals through an education model combining theoretical knowledge and practical training. From March 12th to 16th, more than 100 students of our college majoring in tourism management, together with 13 teachers and students from the School of Tourism and Economic Management of Lijiang Teachers College, travelled to Wuxi, Suzhou, Shanghai, and Hangzhou in Eastern China for the practice of tour guide simulation.

The practice was characterized by the following features.

Firstly, we were taking advantage of the rich tourism resources of the Yangtze River Delta in correspondence with China’s national strategy. During the practice, students experienced personally the construction of the National Grand Canal Cultural Park, the protection and inheritance of traditional tea making techniques such as the Longjing Tea and other typical intangible cultural heritages, the integration of culture and tourism in the Yangtze River Delta, and the cities being built as the world-class tourism destination.

Secondly, both our teachers and students were practicing the knowledge-action unity on the problem-oriented principle. Before the trip, students were required to collect information about each city of destination, write guide speeches, and prepare the talent show. During the trip, students offered guide services, experienced the entire guide work, and responded to any emergencies at any time; teachers conduct real-time evaluations. After the trip, teachers and students reflected on the practice together for the purpose of better work and study later. This demonstrated the true unity of knowledge and action.

Thirdly, we were integrating the practice with the curricular standard for the major of Tourism Management, involving the courses of Science of Tourism Resources, Basic Knowledge of Tour Guide, Tour Guide Service, Design of Tourism Itinerary, Curricular Design and Development for Hands-on Inquiry Based Learning, Tourism Consumer Behavior, etc. The practice would be a great help to restructuring the curriculum and revising our talent cultivation plan.

Finally, teachers and students of both universities were experiencing the new industrial form based on the integration of culture and tourism. During the practice, students enhanced their understanding of the new forms of tourism such as night travel, and tourism focusing on intangible cultural heritages, eco-environment, and urban areas. The communication between the two universities could also help students understand the differences in the development of culture and tourism between China’s eastern and western regions.

This training practice, a good trial of our college’s Field Class, has greatly improved students’ professional skills, broadened their horizons, and enhanced their occupation loyalty. It has also contributed to the new practice of Jiangsu Province to promote the Chinese path to modernization in all respects.
